Josse van der Schaft
Pianist / Composer / Teacher
- Josse van der Schaft (Amsterdam, 1992) started playing piano at 10 years old and quickly discovered his love for jazz and improvised music when he joined the jazz band at his local music school two years later. Today he is a graduate of the Conservatory of Amsterdam - having studied with Harmen Fraanje, and is active as a musician and teacher in and around his hometown Amsterdam.
- He signed with Fattoria Musica Records, and released his debut album Hollow together with Augustas Baronas on drums and Tijs Klaassen on double bass on 2 February 2018. In November of 2024 the trio is set to record their second album, mimesis, featuring all new original compositions.
Hollow"A perfectly balanced album on which influences from classical music from the early twentieth century and masters of today result in an original and contemporary idiom. Josse van der Schaft uses his technique and vision for beautiful, contemporary and yet modest compositions. A startling and promising debut." - Jazzenzo.nl
"What a delight hearing such young musicians - van der Schaft only recently graduated from the Conservatory in Amsterdam - show restraint and withhold from trying to show off their chops. Van der Schaft has a velvet touch and succeeds, with sparse but well-chosen notes, to enter the heart of the listener." - Jazzflits.nl

"Beautiful music! Finally music again where it's not about superficial effects but instead resolves around real improvisation, melodies, tension curves and honesty"
- Florian Weber
